Flat spots on the wheel, uneven wear, or grooves cutting into the surface are the obvious signs. If the trolley is harder to push than before, or it sticks instead of rolling smooth, the wheels or bearings are probably worn. Grinding noise almost always means the bearing has failed inside the wheel. Do not wait on this — worn wheels push extra load onto the gear mechanism and that wears out too.

Remove the load and isolate the trolley first. Check each of the four wheels individually since wear is rarely even. Look for flat spots or cracking, and confirm each wheel turns smoothly on its bearing. Our geared trolleys use interchangeable spares, so a worn wheel can be swapped without replacing the whole unit. Replace wheels in the right sequence so the load stays evenly distributed once reassembled.

The whole trolley is built to spread the load across all four wheels equally. That is what keeps wear and friction in check. The moment one wheel starts wearing faster than the rest, the load shifts onto the others, and they start wearing faster too. It snowballs from there. Catch it early, swap the worn wheel, and the trolley goes back to running the way it is supposed to.

Wheels, first — check for wear and make sure they spin freely. Hand chain wheel and hand chain need a look for damage. Run the gear mechanism and listen for grinding or resistance. Check the side plates for any bending, especially if there have been collisions. Make sure the width adjustment has not loosened. And just push the trolley along the beam — it should move smooth, not stick.

A quick check before every use is the minimum. Beyond that, a proper inspection covering wheels, bearings, gear mechanisms, and hand chains needs to happen on a schedule, and how often depends on how hard the trolley works. A trolley running all day on a shipping dock needs checking far more often than one used now and then in a small workshop.
